decolonizing aid magazine 3 title

How to decolonize aid?

Development cooperation and decolonization. One might expect these areas to go hand in hand as a matter of course. The reality, unfortunately, is somewhat more complex, but it brings exciting debates and promotes learning and growth. This was the experience of our national coordinator Tayson Mudakiri from Zimbabwe during the ten years he has been working for terre des hommes. Keywords like "decolonization", "critique of racism".

Health and sexual rights

Almost one-third of all women in developing countries have their first child at the age of 19 or younger. This is according to the latest study "Motherhood in Childhood" published by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in June 2022. Research shows that there are various reasons for the high number of teenage pregnancies: early first sexual experiences, child abuse and difficult access to contraceptives.

Mobile Health Services Zimbabwe

119 francs for a liter of gasoline

Mobility is central to the functioning of our society. This is just as true in Switzerland as it is in southern Africa, where many people rely on public transportation to reach their jobs, go to school or access medical services. Zimbabwe has a general curfew. Even though it is less strictly enforced there than in neighbouring South Africa, the majority of the population cannot get through the police roadblocks. The surprisingly unspectacular end of an era that has lasted too long

For a long time the power of Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe seemed untouchable. Now his army has unexpectedly placed him under house arrest in a cloak-and-dagger operation and disempowered his next entourage. Our staff and partner organisations confirm that the situation in the country has so far remained calm.

A teenager is helped by his friends through a spider web-like rope structure.

The future begins where the road ends

Matabeleland South is one of the poorest regions of Zimbabwe. Young people who lose their parents here often take responsibility for their younger siblings. Since they have to earn money, they can hardly go to school and thus lose their future prospects. The Esandleni Sothando Trust's youth camp offers them a chance for a new start in this situation. Impressions from a project visit.
