Women on strike - go and take men with you

On 14 June 1991 women went on strike in Switzerland. Rather symbolically, but nevertheless a historical event! After 28 years a new edition is necessary. Because the central demands of that time are still not fulfilled: Equal pay, fair representation in leading positions, protection against violence and discrimination. terre des hommes schweiz joins the demands of the women's strike.

Violence against women is still an unacceptable reality in Switzerland. In our project countries it is one of the main obstacles to development. All over the world, women and girls experience psychological and sexual violence in their closest relationships. Our youth projects make it very clear: if young women are strengthened in their self-confidence and protected by a supportive environment, violence can be reduced.

However, it is equally crucial to involve and motivate young men to live a masculinity that is not defined by the exercise of violence. Inequality of opportunity still exists even in international NGOs. It is true that 70 percent of all employees are women. However, 70 percent of the managers are men. The fair share initiative, which we have joined with many other organizations, aims to change this. Together, we are committed to bringing the proportion of women on management boards, boards of directors and foundation boards in line with that of our teams by 2030.

The talents of young women are to be promoted in our organisations to the same extent as those of young men. There is still much to be done, both nationally and internationally. Join us in the worldwide struggle for equality - on Women's Strike Day on 14 June and beyond!
