Young people against violence
The region of Matagalpa in the north of Nicaragua is one of the country's most densely populated areas. The difficult economic and social circumstances repeatedly lead to tensions and to a rural exodus. Young people in particular are despondent about their future and often opt for migration. Our partner organisation Asociación Centro Jurídico Popular (CJP) tries to deter people from leaving Matagalpa and teaches young people to become mediators. They also encourage participation in a youth radio station.

Education for young people
The poverty and unemployment in Nicaragua have a particularly hard impact on young people. When parents abandon their families to go looking for work, the children have to take on responsibility for the rest of the family. This means that girls, especially, stop going to school and look after the house instead or take a poorly paid job. Our partner organisation Asociacon Infantil "Tuktan Sirpi" in Jinotega and Yali develops the skills of young people, strengthens awareness of their rights and gives them also the opportunity to take some professional training.

Young people defy their lack of prospects
Because of the high level of unemployment, young people in Nicaragua have next to no prospect of finding a job. As a result of this, many of them fall into a vicious circle of drugs, violence and crime. terre des hommes schweiz combats this lack of prospects with a fund for autonomous youth groups. This is used for a variety of initiatives and creative activities that allow young people to develop prospects for the future and break out of the spiral of poverty.
