Our work in Tanzania

HIV/Aids is a universal concern in Tanzania. Many children and young people are left on their own or have to look after sick parents. terre des hommes schweiz helps young people to cope in this situation. Our partner organisations also address recent alarming trends such as albino killings.
In Tanzania, terre des hommes schweiz mainly supports children and young people affected by HIV/Aids. One of the consequences of the HIV/Aids pandemic is the increasing number of sexual attacks on women and girls. That is why terre des hommes schweiz supports programmes to prevent violence against women and girls and to encourage their self-assertiveness. Because their parents are sick or dead, many children and young people in Tanzania have to take on a great deal of work and responsibility.

Young people running a bank
The project Humuliza, which terre des hommes schweiz helped to initiate, is playing a pioneering role for southern Africa as a whole. Humuliza is now a centre of expertise which, together with the orphans' organisation VSI (Vijana Simama Imara), is spreading throughout the region. For example, some of the young people from VSI are operating a bank. Children and young people can keep their savings there, obtain loans for small enterprises (such as chicken rearing) or receive financial contributions towards urgently required essentials. The young people decide together as a group how the money should be used.

Stopping albino killings
terre des hommes schweiz has been working in Tanzania since the 1980s and can rely on partner organisations that have a great deal of experience. They continue to achieve successes, both large and small. In 2009/2010 there were numerous cases in Tanzania of people with albinism being murdered. The phenomenon of albino killing is rooted in the superstition that the body parts of albinos bring good luck. Our partner organisation Nelico carried out intensive education and lobbying work and has considerably stemmed the tide of albino killings.
