Coffee

In May 2018, a slightly different group travelled to Peru for a visit to our project "Better income for young people thanks to quality coffee". In addition to our project coordinator at the time, Joachim Jung, and the national coordinator Jannet Villanueva, who usually visit the projects together, Sarah Kreis, responsible for business cooperation, and Dina Horowitz, co-owner of the Basel-based coffee roasting company Haenowitz & Page, accompanied the trip. They brought with them the hope that this trip will lead to cooperation.

Hands pick out the bright red coffee cherries.
Thanks to our help, the coffee farmers produce such high quality that gourmets import it into Switzerland.

Our partner organisation CEDEPAS Centro supports young coffee farmers in improving their coffee quality in order to have better sales opportunities. They could no longer earn sufficient income with traditional methods and had to migrate to the cities for poorly paid jobs.

The project enables them to remain within their family structures. This not only ensures the care of children and aging parents but also exploits the potential of the young producers and the ideal altitude.

After a few days of travelling and two days in the project, the first good news. Dina Horowitz found the coffee already "very well balanced" during a first cup on site. Of course it was still too early to say anything in conclusion. So in August 2018, a first sample was roasted and tasted in the roasting plant in Basel (see the report "Cupping" of the day week). The quality convinced the coffee roasters present there.
The first delivery was ordered and 650 kg could now be roasted in Basel in February 2019.

As of now, OUR coffee is over www.haenowitzpage.ch available.
By buying the coffee you directly support the young producers. In addition, CHF 1 per 250 grams goes to the local project work. We recommend you to give the coffee as a gift. In this way, you will be giving double the pleasure of the coffee: to the recipient and to the young people we care for.

From Peru to Basel

On the way from the idea of a cooperation to the first coffee package we learned a lot about coffee. We would like to divide this into two film series here.

The travel diary in five films.

Our partners from Haenowitz&Page have contributed a lot to the taste of CEDEPAS coffee with their roasting. We looked over the coffee makers' shoulders and had the craft explained to us in six films.
