While the statement reaffirms the UN process for the self-determination of the Saharawis, it now, for the first time, views Morocco\u2019s autonomy plan as a possible solution. terre des hommes schweiz has expressed concern over this statement.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the official visit to Switzerland by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in late April 2026, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eda.admin.ch\/de\/newnsb\/otuDmAp04WW60pb3YMqdi\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.eda.admin.ch\/de\/newnsb\/otuDmAp04WW60pb3YMqdi\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joint statement<\/a>. In it, the Federal Council describes Morocco\u2019s 2007 autonomy plan for the Saharawis in the occupied Western Sahara as \u201cthe most serious, credible, and pragmatic basis for resolving this conflict.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis position is concerning<\/strong>, as Switzerland has thus far adhered to international legal principles and supported the Saharawis\u2019 right to self-determination,\u201d says Sylvia Valentin, Development Policy Campaigns, at terre des hommes schweiz.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Right to Self-Determination as a Core Principle of Decolonization<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the past 35 years, the UN Security Council has adopted annual resolutions calling for peace negotiations between Western Sahara and Morocco. Since 1991, it has extended the mandate of the UN peacekeeping mission MINURSO every year. It belongs to the Sahrawi people.&#8221;<\/strong><br\/><br\/>Fatma Moulay, Sahrawi and activist (SONREP)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:10%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new resolution proposes Morocco\u2019s 2007 \u201cautonomy plan\u201d as the\u2014and only\u2014basis for negotiations. The plan stipulates that Morocco intends to grant Western Sahara autonomous status within the Kingdom, without a prior referendum. The Polisario Front, the official and internationally recognized representative of the Sahrawi people, would be willing to accept autonomy as an option alongside independence in a referendum. However, it must not be the only option. Such an approach contradicts the international right to self-determination of former colonies.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Morocco has been lobbying for its autonomy plan for years. And it has been successful, as more and more countries are supporting this supposedly good solution. <\/strong>  However, this ignores the will of the other party to the conflict and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terredeshommesschweiz.ch\/en\/western-sahara\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"23417\">right of the Sahrawi people<\/a> to determine their own future.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:20%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.34%\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThe autonomy plan was developed without us; we weren\u2019t consulted.
