"Youth central to Corona crisis management"

A call for solidarity with young people in the Global South, a successful year 2019 marked by civil society upheavals worldwide and a balanced annual financial statement. While terre des hommes schweiz provides extraordinary corona aid for young people in Africa and Latin America, the ordinary general assembly of the Swiss development organisation shows: 60 years after its foundation in Basel, terre des hommes schweiz remains on course.

"Right now, our solidarity with young people in the Global South is particularly called for. Their innovative strength and their commitment to civil society will be central to coping with the consequences of the pandemic. This is what the managing director of terre des hommes switzerland Franziska Lauper and president Brigitta Gerber write in their joint foreword to the 2019 annual report of the Swiss relief organisation, which was founded 60 years ago in Basel by people committed to development policy.

Corona emergency aid and the core business

While the Federal Council is gradually relaxing the emergency law in the face of Covid-19 and the consequences of the pandemic for the Swiss economy and the Swiss workplace are shaping public debate, terre des hommes schweiz is providing extraordinary assistance for and with young people in Africa and Latin America in the Corona crisis. At the same time, terre des hommes switzerland is sticking to its proven core business, according to Lauper and Gerber in the foreword to the 2019 Annual Report: "Together with our local partners, we are empowering young people and communities who can hold their own under the most difficult living conditions by their own efforts.

Annual accounts balanced

The 2019 annual report clearly shows what the core business of terre des hommes schweiz actually means and what the charitable organisation for young people in Africa, Latin America and Switzerland achieved last year. At the ordinary general assembly (AGM) of terre des hommes schweiz, which took place online on 26 May 2020 under the chairmanship of the president Brigitta Gerber, the annual report and the audited detailed annual accounts 2019 were unanimously approved. Despite the highly competitive donations market, terre des hommes schweiz can present a balanced account for the year 2019. With income of around CHF 9.5 million, the annual result shows a slight increase of CHF 119,300. terre des hommes schweiz generated around 50 percent of its income from donations and sponsorships last year, while the SDC's programme contributions in 2019 amounted to a good quarter of the total income or CHF 2.43 million.

New on the board

On the occasion of the AGM, terre des hommes schweiz announces a change in the association's board: Andrea Seiberth, agronomist from Gelterkinden BL, moves up for Zeynep Yerdelen, who had been involved since 2003. The following people are currently on the strategic committee of terre des hommes schweiz: Dr. Brigitta Gerber, ethnologist and historian, Basel; Margo Carlen, finance and project manager, Basel; Jan Goepfert, lawyer and historian, Basel; Marianne Gujer, ethnologist, Basel; Anastasia Planta, lawyer and psychologist, Basel; Jürg Schönenberger, typographical designer, Zurich; Andrea Seiberth, agronomist, Gelterkinden; Sandra Soland, historian, Basel.
