Economic strengthening and empowerment of young people in rural areas

Poverty characterizes the lives of many people in El Salvador, especially that of young adultsnwho cannot find jobs or places at university and have few prospects. They often only have a choice, Gangstoclosessfromtohiking or under poor conditions to work. With our local Partner organization CORDES support we They help them set up income-generating initiatives and offer financial start-up support.

Background

The civil war in El Salvador ended in 1992, but the gap between rich and poor remains huge.ss. In the department Chalatenangoone of the regions most affected by the conflict, the poverty rate is over 30%. Families live from agriculture, fishing and remittances” (private remittances from abroad). The region suffers from high unemployment and violence. There are hardly any prospects for young people in particular – almost a third of them neither attend school nor have training or work.

Project goals

The aim is to young adults to support young adults in developing and successfully implementing their own income-generating initiatives to enable them to escape poverty.

Project activities

  • Information events: We regularly organize events to make young people aware of what we have to offer.
  • Training program: We offer a program in which young adults learn entrepreneurial, business and technical skills as well as marketing and personal development.
  • Start-up capital and support: We provide young adults start-up capital for their income-generating projects and provide them with expert support.
  • Cooperation: We work closely with public authorities, schools and parents or parents or guardians together.

Beneficiaries

In the past project phase were able to 232 young adultsstart their own income initiative. They have an average monthly income of 330 US dollars.

Our partner organization

CORDES (Fundación for la Cooperación y el Desarrollo Comunal de El Salvador) has been since 1988 for sustainable development in rural areas. terre des hommes switzerland supports the organization since 2002.

Project location and phase

We work in 16 communities in the department of Chalatenango. The current project phase covers the years 2025-2027 with an annual budget of CHF 160 000.
