The history of terre des hommes schweiz

Founded in 1960, terre des hommes schweiz is now committed to improving the living conditions of young people in ten countries around the world. We promote social justice, equal opportunities and peace.

Foundation and development

In 1960, the aid organisation Terre des hommes was founded by Swiss journalist Edmond Kaiser. In 1972, a difference in focus with regard to the structures and priorities of development cooperation led to the organisation splitting. This resulted in three separate organisations in Switzerland, which are legally, financially and organisationally independent of each other.

Our focus

terre des hommes schweiz, based in Basel, campaigns for the rights of young people in Africa, Latin America and Switzerland. In cooperation with local partner organisations, we work in ten project countries and promote equal opportunities, social integration and education. Our focus is on sexual and reproductive health and rights, sustainable livelihoods and peace and security.

Our core expertise is participatory and solution-focused work with young people. Every year, we reach around 373,000 young people through our projects.

The alliance between terre des hommes schweiz and Terre des Hommes Suisse

Since 2016, terre des hommes schweiz and Terre des Hommes Suisse have been working together in an alliance to better coordinate their activities and thus achieve a greater impact. An important milestone in this collaboration was the merging of the programmes in Brazil and Colombia and the further development of joint education and awareness-raising work in Switzerland.

Terre des Hommes Suisse, based in Geneva, supports around 60 projects in ten countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia. It works with local organisations and is committed to projects that enable vulnerable population groups, especially children, to learn about their rights and take control of their lives. In Switzerland, it raises awareness among children and young people on topics such as children’s rights, solidarity and development cooperation.
