Activating strengths together

Solution-focused work

The solution-focused approach (SFA) helps young people to recognise their own strengths and confidently develop solutions to their challenges. Instead of focusing on problems, SFA helps them to identify scope for action and take the initiative.

Pioneering work using the solution-focused approach (SFA)

terre des hommes schweiz was one of the first organisations to use the solution-focused approach (SFA) in development cooperation. Together with Dr Therese Steiner, an expert in this field, we developed the Youth2Youth training programme to provide targeted support for young people and professionals.

What are the advantages of solution-focused work?

  • Focus on strengths instead of problems. Young people learn to recognise and use their abilities.
  • Empowerment and self-confidence. SFA turns young people into experts in their own lives who take responsibility and actively shape their future.
  • Better communication. SFA works on an individual and societal level. It promotes communication within families and communities, which reduces conflicts and strengthens social cohesion.

How we use the solution-focused approach (SFA)

Individual support

Together with our partner organisations, we support young people in overcoming challenges. Instead of perceiving them as victims, we help them to mobilise their strengths and resources.

Group work

In workshops, young people work together on solutions, share experiences and develop mutual support. These groups strengthen self-confidence and help with the development of social skills.

Youth2Youth – training for multipliers

Through the Youth2Youth training programme, we empower professionals and young people to pass on the solution-focused approach (SFA) independently. This multiplies the impact and strengthens entire communities.

Our Youth2Youth programme is implemented in regions such as Southern Africa, Central America and South America. Since 2008, it has been training employees and young people to use and pass on SFA in their communities.

Youth2Youth –
the programme at a glance

  • Intensive training in two modules. Participants learn how to activate their own strengths and those of others.
  • Sustainable changes. Young people document their progress and set achievable goals. They share their successes with their peers to strengthen their impact and self-confidence.
  • Training of Trainers. Advanced multipliers complete an extended programme to pass on their knowledge.
