Activating strengths together

Solution-oriented work

The solution focussed approach (SFA) supports young people in recognizing their own strengths and developing self-confident solutions to their challenges. Instead of focusing on problems, SFA helps them to discover scope for action and take responsibility for their own actions.

Pioneering work in the solution focussed approach (SFA)

terre des hommes schweiz was one of the first organizations to use the solution-focused approach (SFA) in development cooperation. Together with Dr. Therese Steiner, an expert in this field, we developed the Youth2Youth training program to provide targeted support for young people and professionals.

Why solution-oriented work?

  • Focus on strengths instead of problems: young people learn to recognize and use their abilities.
  • Empowerment and self-confidence: SFA turns young people into experts in their own lives who take responsibility and actively shape their future.
  • Better communication. SFA works on an individual and societal level. It promotes communication within families and communities, which reduces conflicts and strengthens social cohesion.

How we apply the solution focussed approach (SFA)

Individual support

Together with our partner organizations, we support young people in overcoming challenges. Instead of perceiving them as victims, we support them in mobilizing their strengths and resources.

Group work

In workshops, young people work together on solutions, share experiences and develop mutual support. These groups strengthen self-confidence and promote social skills.

Youth2Youth - Training for multipliers

Through the Youth2Youth training program, we empower professionals and young people to pass on the solution-focused approach (SFA) independently. This multiplies the impact and strengthens entire communities.

Our Youth2Youth program is implemented in regions such as Southern Africa, Central America and South America. Since 2008, it has been training employees and young people to use and pass on SFA in their communities.
