Our sponsors enjoy the benefits of being able to make regular and targeted donations to a project without a great deal of effort and at the same time being kept up to date on its development. Some of them have been for many years. We asked our sponsor Rita Müller from Therwil why they are so committed and why they stick with it.
Sascha Tankerville, Information and Media
Rita Müller (62) has been sponsoring the Protect and Empower Working Children project in Nicaragua for five years. Before that, the music teacher from Therwil supported the CAMM meeting place for street children project in Brazil for 23 years. She explains why she is involved with the sponsorship and why she has stuck with it for so long in our Asked about it section:
What motivated you to take on a sponsorship at terre des hommes schweiz?
My mother was very socially committed and taught us to share from an early age. When I started earning money myself, it was clear to me that I wanted to give something to those who had less. In the 1970s, I visited a nun who was committed to helping children and families in Thailand away from the tourist resorts. I witnessed how people live in extreme poverty. Back in Switzerland, I struggled to find my inner balance in the face of abundance. It was only through the church community that I began to support development projects with the approach of helping people to help themselves. This is how I came to terre des hommes schweiz.
Why do you support the Protect and Empower Working Children project?
Above all, I wanted to support the weakest members of society. These are actually always the children and young people. In the Working Children Protect and Empower project, they receive help to get their lives off to a good start so that they can shape them independently and with dignity.
What does the sponsorship give you?
The project reports that I receive regularly are always interesting. They give me the opportunity to follow how the project and the children are developing. It somehow becomes personal and takes on a face. They also strengthen my trust in terre des hommes schweiz. There is so much advertising from other aid organizations. It’s good that terre des hommes schweiz is restrained and doesn’t work in a blatant way. That is why I am convinced that terre des hommes schweiz uses my money where it is needed.
With a sponsorship, sponsors support a project on a regular basis over a longer period of time. They can choose from a wide range of different projects: From support for girls’ projects to violence prevention projects and support for AIDS orphans. Sponsorships enable us to plan and secure these projects in the long term.
You can find more information about sponsorships on our sponsorship page or give us a call: Tel. 061 338 91 38.
