Gladys: "I want to give something back."
In Zimbabwe there is hardly a family that is not affected by AIDS. HIV-positive young people often not only suffer from the actual disease, but society also excludes them socially and economically. Our partner organisation Million Memory Project strengthens HIV-positive young people like 18-year-old Gladys with a training programme and psychological counselling and helps them to find new courage to face life. Today, Gladys is a volunteer for the organization and supports HIV patients of the same age. "Despite the HIV virus, I have future prospects today," she says with gratitude.
Renato's mother: "A part of me died with my son."
Murder is the most common cause of death among Afro-Brazilian youth in Brazil. The 17-year-old Renato was also in the wrong place at the wrong time and was shot. Because murdered youths are labeled as criminals, their mothers are often left alone with their grief. Our partner organisation GCASC offers mourning mothers psychological support and gives them the opportunity to come to terms with the fate of their children. These fates serve as a basis to sensitize young people at schools. They also form the basis for campaigns in which politicians demand measures to prevent violence.
"Life is worth living, even with HIV/AIDS. I want to communicate that to others who are affected by it."
Gladys, youth animator from Zimbabwe, 18 years
