All over the world, women took to the streets last March 8th. Also in the capital of El Salvador, San Salvador, thousands of women protested against the extremely rigid abortion law in their country: abortion is forbidden without exception.

At the end of October, Argemiro Almeida died in Salvador, Brazil. We mourn the loss of the activist who for years passionately worked for the cause of the poor in Brazil. With his commitment, also in Switzerland, he helped open new doors for critical reporting on the consequences of major sporting events.

The rejection of the referendum in Colombia has severely shaken legitimate hopes. The discussion event with Colombian representatives of the peace movement on 1 November in Basel will attempt to find answers to this question.

8 March 2016 was the annual International Women's Day. All over the world women drew attention to their disadvantage. So also in Brazil. The young people from our partner organisations were in the forefront of this event, opposing the prevailing machismo.

About two weeks ago, the President of the Parliament, Eduardo Cunha, gave the green light: since then the impeachment proceedings against Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff have been underway. She is accused of violating tax laws and of presenting beautiful budget figures. Many observers consider the procedure to be a political manoeuvre by the opposition with the aim of deposing the president and her social policy. Civil society actors, such as our partner organisation Centro Sabiá, are lining up alongside the President.

The legal concept of traditional peoples in Brazil has only been in existence since 2007, and the number of self-declared traditional peoples has increased dramatically since then. With this increase, unresolved questions become more urgent: When is a group considered a traditional people or community and who defines it? These questions will be the subject of this year's meeting "Round Table Brazil 2015" at the end of November.
