Every vote counts!

On 29 November, a vote will finally be taken on the corporate responsibility initiative. terre des hommes schweiz has been committed to it from the outset. The initiative demands that it goes without saying that Swiss companies that disregard human rights and destroy the environment should take responsibility for this. The petition for a referendum enjoys broad support among the population and the business community and is also supported by representatives of all parties. It must, however, stand up to financially powerful opponents who are resorting to sometimes dubious means for their anti-campaign.

Stop administrative detention for children!

Switzerland puts children and young people behind bars, even though it is highly dangerous for their psyche. Minors end up in so-called administrative detention if the Confederation wants to enforce legal provisions on foreigners. Switzerland is thus violating the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The canton of Geneva wants to ban administrative detention for children with an initiative. We support this initiative and demand alternative solutions.

Conference: Land Conflicts in Southern Africa

Since the end of apartheid, the question of access to land and redistribution has remained almost unanswered. With the fact that agricultural land has become a globally contested resource, this question has become even more acute. A conference of the Campaign for Debt Relief and Compensation in Southern Africa (KEESA) is dealing with the tension between the right to land and the right to possession in the hands of a few people.

Switzerland exchanges good reputation for arms deals

At the beginning of November 2017, it became known that Swiss arms companies also intend to export to countries at war in the future. This would require a relaxation of the export ordinances. terre des hommes schweiz, together with 24 organisations, therefore supports a letter from the Group Switzerland without Army (GSoA) to the Security Policy Commission. At the same time, the state armaments company Ruag is planning to build an ammunition factory in Brazil.

Fewer weapons mean more security

What applies in our project countries is also valid for Switzerland: restricted access to weapons means fewer deaths and victims. Our many years of experience in the prevention of violence is the reason why terre des hommes schweiz now also supports the newly founded platform for a sustainable weapons law. Its aim is to create a high standard of weapons law throughout Europe and ultimately to save human lives.
