Western Sahara: Young women successfully build up

Morocco has no intention of lifting the illegal occupation of Western Sahara. On the contrary, by building solar power plants cast in concrete, it is creating facts. This green cloak is intended to hide the fact that this is about the exploitation of raw materials. But this does not stop two young women in the Smara refugee camp from building for the future.

The Moroccan Kingdom refuses to implement the UN decision to hold a referendum on the future of Western Sahara. Meanwhile, Morocco is trying to further cement its position in the area. The interest in Western Sahara is mainly economic. Under the hot desert of gravel and boulders, mineral resources are luring visitors. A detailed report by Western Sahara Resource Watch (WSRW) shows how Morocco is in the process of installing renewable energy plants in Western Sahara.

Time and again success stories
Even if the young people run the risk of losing hope in the long term for a peaceful solution to the conflict with Morocco (terre des hommes schweiz reported), the young people are always producing success stories. For example the young women Memona Mohamed and with Lala Mohammet Ali. Both of them contracted polio as children. Because of her untreated illness, Lala could only crawl on her knees until the age of 16. Only an operation in Spain enabled her to learn to walk with crutches.

With initiative and support against hopelessness
Disabled people are very lost and isolated in a refugee situation like the one we are experiencing," Lala knows from personal experience. For this reason, the two young women (together with other young people) decided to found the group Nostros Somos Capaces (We are capable). The group is planning various awareness projects (e.g. against smoking) and the establishment of a recycling and art workshop. And they want to organize their own movie nights.
