Brazilian youth on tour

During four days, 120 young people from different organisations in northeastern Brazil moved from place to place to learn about best practice examples in organic farming. The aim of this touring event was not only to promote intensive exchange but also to mobilise the population.

From 25 to 29.03.2014, young people from different organizations in the Brazilian Northeast took part in a touring event of agro-ecology, which was organized by our partner organization Centro Sabia. This touring event is one of several events that will mobilize the Brazilian population for the national conference on organic agriculture to be held in Juazeiro (Bahia) this summer. This conference will also be organized by our long-standing Brazilian partner organization Centro Sabia.
Best practice in sustainable use of water
Over 120 young people from various organisations (including partner organisations of terre des hommes schweiz such as ASSEMA, lider Accao, GCASC) took part in this touring event for young people. Part of the programme was visits to various estates where young people are practising exemplary organic farming. The young visitors thus learned about best practice examples of reforestation, sustainable use of water in arid areas and the revitalisation of springs and rivers, among other things.
Cultural exchange important
During the visits there was a lot of discussion and a lot of knowledge was exchanged. The programme also included a rich cultural section, in which the young people presented the culture of their regions of origin to each other and exchanged ideas. This part of the programme on cultural identity is particularly important for the traditional communities.
Intensive political debates
Another highlight of the caravan were the big evening debates, which focused in particular on agricultural and youth policy. The young people were very creative in the presentation of their results and also applied the experiences and insights gained during the day in various ways. Our National Coordinator (Alexandre Queiroz de Menezes), who accompanied the event, commented on the action with just one sentence: "It was simply fantastic!
