Small farmers force the state to obey laws

Members of our partner organisation Centro Sabia from Brazil occupied the municipal administration of Campo Formoso until it committed itself to abide by national law in the future. Until then, local smallholders had been given too little consideration by law when buying food for the state school meals.

At the beginning of September 2015 our partner organisation Centro Sabia was able to achieve a small but clear success. Farmers of Centro Sabia occupied the municipal administration of Campo Formoso (Brazil) in order to force them to comply with their legal obligations. Following the forced dialogue, the city administration has promised to comply with national laws in the future and to obtain 50 percent of the food for school meals from small-scale organic farming. The city was also sentenced to a fine.
Healthy food and close sales markets
According to the national school feeding programme (PNAE), half of the food for school meals must come from small-scale farming. This state programme is one of the achievements of social movements such as our partner organisation Centro Sabia. It aims to guarantee healthy food at schools and markets for small-scale agriculture.
