No security without solidarity
The "Security 2023" study published today by the ETH once again shows that international cooperation is highly popular among the population: from left to right, a clear majority is of the opinion that so-called development aid should be increased. In contrast, support for an increase in defense spending has fallen again compared to June 2022. "The Federal Council is politicizing past the people with its planned cuts in international cooperation," comments Andreas Missbach, Executive Director of Alliance Sud, on the results of the representative survey. "The population has understood it for a long time: In the face of conflicts and crises all over the world, it takes
Young Refugees and Freedom - Photo Exhibition in the Open Church Elisabethen
As part of a summer workshop organized by terre des hommes switzerland, young refugees from Ukraine and other countries dealt with the topics of "freedom" and "wearing masks". As a creative realization, land art objects as well as plaster masks were created. Photos of these objects and their creation will be exhibited in the Open Church Elisabethen from March 7 to 26, 2023. What does freedom mean for each and every individual? And how does it feel to wear a mask? Can it also be a protection in everyday life? Young people with a refugee background dealt with these questions during a week of workshops. Statement on the police action of 25.11.22 against unauthorized demonstration in Basel
On Friday, November 25, an unauthorized demonstration in Basel ended violently. After about 200 people gathered on the Theaterplatz around 7 p.m. on the occasion of the International Day against Violence against Women, the Basel City Cantonal Police used various means such as rubber bullets to break up the demonstration. According to the police, dialogue with the demonstrators had been sought beforehand. It seems grotesque: On the same day, the cantonal police went public with the campaign "Halt Gewalt" (Stop Violence) - and on the same evening, they reacted with violence to the demonstrators, who drew attention to the same problems. Â
COP27: Progress despite standstill
The results of the COP27 climate conference are mixed: With the adoption of a Loss & Damage fund, a historic step was taken towards climate justice, but there is stagnation on climate protection. Our comment on COP27: "Although the countries of the global South are the ones that have hardly contributed to climate change, they are the ones most affected by the climate catastrophe - this also applies to young people and future generations. Binding global rules are therefore needed that immediately hold the perpetrators of the crisis accountable." Swiss arms companies profit from Bolsonaro's weapons policy
On October 30, Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro will stand for re-election. Whether the opposing candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva can prevail in the second round of voting is still uncertain. From the perspective of human rights organizations, Brazil has experienced devastating regressions under Bolsonaro. The partner organizations of terre des hommes switzerland, which are involved in violence prevention in Brazil, therefore look forward to election day with great concern. Regarding the gun violence prevailing in Brazil, Bolsonaro is pursuing a fatal policy: during his term in office, more than 40 decrees have been published facilitating the purchase of weapons. The number of registered weapons owned by civilians has risen to a current 1,300,000
